The run down is this:
I drew this over a year ago and it sat around unfinished until last week when I started painting because I was too depressed to draw new things.
I know the unicorn's nose has a vaguely canine feel to it but it's supposed to be deer-like (or as someone else graciously suggested, lion-like).
The narwhal tusks are too high on their heads...I know.
And...um...the scan seriously washed out the colors. It has more intensity in real life.
*dies*
P.S. Scanning it was a pain in the butt. Seriously.
EDIT: This was not particularly inspired by The Last Unicorn...I realize the 'visual cues' may be there but that movie and book were pretty much the furthest things from my mind when I drew and painted this. Just for the record.
Wauh, this is so, so beautiful, Lisa! All the details! (!!!) I just about have a fit and give up if I have to draw box-buildings (hahahahah) or fingers Your patience and skill never fail to astound me.
Again, I absolutely love the colour scheme. And all the pieces, plus the rest of the picture that I hadn't previously seen, go so wonderfully together. Really amazing work!
oh wow.
I think this turned out awesome.....its very flowing and elegant. I love all the rocks on the far shore (ooh, and more unicorns over there too!)...heh, I always love how you paint rock.
The unicorn is lovely too, very delicate.^__^
Thanks I would probably have a fit if I had to draw buildings. I nearly had a fit over that stupid castle because I couldn't figure out how to texture the rocks without drawing every single one. Heh. I figured out a surprisingly efficient method for doing it, quite by accident. ^_^
I think one thing that helps is how I tend to wander around while I'm painting so I only paint in ten to fifteen minute spurts before running around doing other things for half an hour...then going back to the painting. Also...with something this big, when I'm sick of one thing I can work on something else. The only things I seriously enjoyed painting were the narwhals and the water.

Thanks. Man, I was so tired when I finished though. I'm still yawning every five minutes...it's amazing how much painting can sap my energy. *passes out*
(Thanks for noticing the two unicorns in the background. I was afraid they blended in too much...)

I love the idea and the composition. I wish I could see this in real life. I'm sure that the colors would stand out so much more and make this even more incredible.
My favorite part of this is the rock base of the castle in the background (and those little unicorns hangin' out over there). Everything is so fluid. Well done.
Gah, don't make excuses for this, it needs none at all. As I said on PD, this is gorgeous! Even from the little WIPs you posted I couldn't tell how fantastic it would be in the end. This is truly breathtaking. So many elements coming together to tell a story. The composition is compelling and beautiful, and I love the birds breaking out of the tree. You deserve an award for all your hard work on this one, especially considering the mood you had to work through... *hugs and hands over stash of chocolate.* I hope the success of this will inspire your muse to create again. ^__^

That castle looks amazing. The technique you used for the stonework really works wonderfully.
Ah! When I paint/draw, I have to do it for hours at a time (sometimes without eating!) because if I wander away, I tend to lose interest =s One of my goals for the next months/years is to get back into the habit of doing art more often, for practice and - more importantly - for fun 0-o
Again, those narwhals are fantastic. It really shows that you enjoyed painting them!
If I work for too long a period at a time, I start rushing through the work and it ends up looking terrible. That's why I've learned to sometimes put the pencil/brushes down and wallk away. If I have to, I just put everything away until the next day. I do run the risk of losing interest but even many times I'll pick up again months later and finish it.
The castle was a part I had to walk away from frequently because I was frustrated with it and when I get frustrated with a painting is when I'm most likely to just give up on it and move to something else. So I'm glad it turned out looking good because...it was a pain.
